ALL SOLAR ENERGY SYSTEMS ARE NOT CREATED EQUAL.

In a String Inverter system, each solar panel is wired together in a series to form a string of panels. This string is then connected to a single inverter near your electric panel, where it is converted from DC to AC electricity.  Because these systems require only one inverter (and therefore have less chance of inverter failure), they are generally less expensive. However, when panels are in

a string, the power is reduced to the lowest-producing solar panel in that string. So these systems are best for locations that provide consistent sunlight for all panels.  See PDF for a full diagram!

STRING INVERTER
DC OPTIMIZER

In this hybrid of the other two systems, DC optimizers are attached to the mounting equipment directly below each solar panel. Each DC optimizer maximizes the DC output of each panel. The optimizers are wired together into a string and the total DC power output is fed into a string inverter that communicates with the optimizers and converts the power to AC. The benefits of this system: It doesn't require all the inverters of the micro-inverter system, and power is not limited to the lowest-producing solar panel, a trait of the string inverter system.  See PDF for a full diagram!

MICRO-INVERTER

Solar panels collect the sun's energy in the form of DC (Direct Current) power. Micro-inverters are installed under each solar panel to convert this energy into AC (Alternating Current) power that is used in your home.  The inverters are wired together, and a larger wire set runs the AC power to the electric panel.  Because factors like solar panel location and shade will result in different solar panels producing different energy levels at different times of the day, micro-inverters ensure maximum energy production because each individual panel is harvesting as much electricity as possible.  See PDF for a full diagram!
